SCHOOL WORK
Shama came to me and said he had to study a certain portion of his Quantitative Reasoning text book for a test the following day.
Okay, bring it let's see. After all, I'd been helping with his home work, so it shouldn't be a problem.
Okay now.
He brought the book, opened a page and said that he was to study both pages.
I told him, "No wahala. Let me look through it, I'll call you."
Nna mehnnnnnn!!!
I stared at the first example: numbers in a rectangle, with more numbers on every side. I look am, look am! E no make sense!
Hmmmm....
I went to the next page: a triangle with the right angle elongated, numbers on every angle and more within... I looked at this one, it also didn't make any sense at all at all!!!
🙆🏻♀🙆🏻♀🙆🏻♀
So I called him, "Shama, this thing doesn't make sense to me oooo. I don't understand it at all. I don't know what we are going to do about this your CA (Continous Assessment) tomorrow," then continued watching TV.
After a while I realised he was still by my side, so I turned to look at him and the look on his face was priceless. He looked scared, confused, horrified, all in one. This kind, "Who do i go to? Where do I turn to?"
😄😅
All of a sudden, I was feeling bad!
What to do???
🤔🤔🥰
Yes! Ask Joy and Dennis. Khandhee may not see my message till the next day.
I took a picture of both pages and sent to them. I told them it was urgent, biko, as the boy was beside me.
Joy looked at it at first and went, "Me ayam not understanding anything!"
Ha! What will I do with this boy? After a while she buzzed me, "I think I get the first one: multiply the two numbers in the middle and add up the two numbers at both extreme ends."
Okay... It made sense! So i called him and put him through.
"The second one nko? Any headway?" I asked her.
'I'll send it to Engineer TY and see if he can help out."
Shama had barely solved two from the first page when the Engineer solved and sent the second page!!
Kwot?!?!?! (An exclamation in my Mum's dialect). Something that I looked and looked at till it was tattooed in my brain but still couldn't make headway, na yim Engineer don solve am na na na?
Iss okay! No wahala.
I called him back and put him through. That's how I ended the evening in peace with Shama.
Whew!!!
But these schools of nowadays seff, their syllabus na wa! So they have chosen to embarrass me and other guardians/adults/parents, ko? No wahala. Ride on. The day I cannot help him, I will send him back to una.
I keep hearing about new subjects like Civic Education, Quantitative Reasoning, and so on... Toh! God help us to help these children oooooo.
What do you do when the child's home work embarrasses you?
How can you make him/her understand that it's not as if your brain is not "hot" but just that we live in a different time. With different subjects. Different curricula...
Be open with them and find a solution...
I guess...
It happens all the time
ReplyDeleteLol. I'm learning.
DeleteNice piece. Just be open enough that you're not all-knowing. That's all!
ReplyDeleteTrue. Thank you.
DeleteLol! At least you learnt how to solve it too. The interesting thing about life is that we learn every day
ReplyDeleteSo true! Thank you.
DeleteOhhhhhhhh my God I can't stop laughing, anyway it's good that it was a bit challenging and you can now help him next time.
ReplyDelete😁😂😃
DeleteI hope. Thanks

ReplyDeleteHahaha, it has happened to me. My niece came back home from scool with CA I couldn't help. I asked her to meet my hussy to assist her but my hussy was not comfortable doing it for her in case she fails. He made attempt but couldn't sleep that night bcs his fear was that if she fails it, how will my niece look at him but at d end it was a good score.
ReplyDeleteOh dear 😂😃
DeleteI can imagine!
...thank God for Joy and Engineer...if not..that child will always remind you of not been of any help I swear..good luck next time too...
ReplyDeleteYou can say that again.
DeleteThank God you sought for solution, at least you rescued your girma. Most a times I complain loudly about the assignments of nowadays, so bulky and tasking. It's like parents even do more work than the teachers. God will continue to help us
ReplyDeleteI Honestly agree. We do more work.
Delete"What do you do when the child's home work embarrasses you? ... Be open with them and find a solution..." For me, these words sum the message in this beautiful piece. However, I think this scenario undercuts the fact that as a society, we should have a frank conversation about the rational for what our children are forced to learn in school. Are curricular chosen by schools because they want to copy "foreign" school and appear "cool". Or are they chosen because they are relevant to the current needs of our own society?
ReplyDelete"....Are curricular chosen by schools because they want to copy "foreign" school and appear "cool". Or are they chosen because they are relevant to the current needs of our own society?" Prof! You have summed it all up! Why are they learning all these? How relevant is it in our society and to them? Thank you Prof!
DeleteSometimes I say themnteachers usshould just tell us parents/guardians that they want to give us home work! Even LaCombe's wasn't this tasking.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter was asked the other day to draw her friends watching television. I just concluded that the teacher wanted to know if we could hold a pencil or not! 😅
Once we try all we can to solve a sum and it seems we aren't making a head way, we go back to school and ask that the teacher explain. Summing it up, school work these days is serious brain work!
I agree!
