BOMB SCARE
After Linda's wedding some years ago, I decided to stay a little longer so as to spend time with my sister. But...
The end of my stay came quickly.
A day before I leave, it starts to rain from about 2pm till the following morning. Ha! I was already considering moving my flight after all my sister won't throw me out.
The rain finally stopped at around 12 noon. That's like 22 hours of straight rain fa!
I put my things together and called the cab guy my sister arranged with to take me to the airport at about 2pm.
My flight was for 4pm or so, and she lived in Ikeja then, but I didn't want any Lagos traffic wahala or story.
On my way to the airport, it starts to drizzle again, haha! What will I do? Well, it stopped before I got to the airport. Oluwa seun (Thank God)!
But after checking in and settling down to wait for my flight to be announced, another round of rain started! Again! This led to the flight being delayed for over an hour. I began to wonder if someone was after my life. Yes mana!
Well, eventually it stopped. As in completely stopped. We were finally asked to board, only for another bout of drizzle to start while we were boarding...
Yesu Kristi! Nza mariri nani (what type of thing is this)?
"I will not die by a plane crash," I murmured!
I chatted with a friend and mentioned the weather condition just before we had to switch off our phones.
When we finally took off, I realised the sky was actually clear and the weather affected only Lagos.
I sighed, relieved!
Okay now, after going through all that torture, I noticed this guy who kept getting up from his seat, walking to the other side of the plane and checking his backpack. Why didn't he keep it above him sef? Why the other side?? He'd get up, go to the bag, fiddle with something in it. Over and over again! Ha! Why does he keep going to the bag? What is he doing?
"Is any other person noticing him abi na only me?"
I wondered.
I was very paranoid while on that flight. Maybe I should have actually moved my flight.. This guy was up half of the flight time. I began to wonder if he intended bombing us...
π
Hian! Hope to say we no escape (in Nigerian Pidgin) weather turbulence only to be bombed?"
At the time, suicide bombing was rampant, and a Nigerian was caught aboard an aircraft abroad trying to detonate a bomb. The incident was still fresh! Do you blame my having concerns?
Then I began to pray all manner of prayers. In the midst of praying, I remembered I saw a certain Deaconess from my Church in the aircraft who is married to a Pastor/military man. Her presence gave me a small assurance. Our faith combined could go a long way, I reasoned.πππ
After so much torture and anguish, I noticed he was actually stuffing somethings into his ears as well as holding his headphones. The buzzing sound /effect of a moving plane in his ears was the reason he kept standing up.
Chaiii!
That buzzing feeling in your ears when air bound can be torturous. It lingers on long after the flight!
The best way to reduce it is to pinch your nose and try to breathe in, you'll feel better instantly. Tested and proven! ✌π»
"Relax. You'll be fine," my friend replied. Imagine getting the message after landing. That message would have made a whole load of difference to me while on board when my mind was torturing my heart.
Oh well!π€·π»♀
Why was I so scared?
Anyone with a similar experience?

DeleteLol... People always say if there are obstacles on your way its God's own way of telling you to stop because something bad is about to happen to you or might. Well, I don't really believe that. I believe that whatever will be will be. Sometime is just paranoia!
ReplyDeleteI guess it was just paranoia.
DeleteUr story was scaring when I was reading it until I discovered that no bad thing happened. Good one and teaching us to be observant when travelling either by air, land and sea
ReplyDeleteMy dear! You felt what I felt the whole time! It's very good to be observant always!

DeleteWhile our society chides fear, it is the emotion that has more than any other in human history helped to keep us safe or live longer. One of C. Achebe's famous quotes puts it aptly: "the cowards remain in their compounds and point at the ruin of the brave." I think what this piece teaches is that we should be willing to express "proportional fear" anytime we are faced with a life-threatening situation.
